Standards, Guidelines & Policies
The Standards of the Profession in Ontario are set out in a variety of documents. These include the Professional Standards for Dietitians in Canada, CDO regulations made under the Dietetic Act and the Regulated Health Professions Act, and other relevant legislation. Together, they set a level of practice that ensures patient safety.
Dietitians are employed in a variety of workplace settings, some of which have rules and regulations that provide additional practice and professional obligations. The dietitian has a responsibility to these additional rules as long as the obligation of the facility are not contrary to Professional Standards for Dietitians in Canada, the dietetic Code of Ethics, the regulations defining professional misconduct or other federal or provincial law. It is very important for dietitians, as well as their employers, to have a good understanding of the laws and regulations that affect dietetic practice.
